Air conditioning units are an Iowan’s best friend by the time mid-summer rolls around. If your AC unit has been struggling to keep up, cutting out, or otherwise not functioning properly, try these troubleshooting tips before calling an HVAC Technician from Wyckoff to service your AC unit.
Potential Air Conditioner Issues and How To Fix Them
AC unit blows warm air
There are two main reasons why your unit could blow warm air. The first one is that your air conditioning unit could simply be out of refrigerant and therefore not producing any cool air to send throughout your house. Another issue could be that your filter and coils are not clean. If this is the case, cold air is not properly circulating through your HVAC system and is causing the cold air to get trapped. Cleaning out your filter and coils could help resolve this. If you need more refrigerant or parts, give us a call!
Thermostat isn’t working
Sometimes the most annoying mistakes can unfortunately be the most obvious thing we overlook. The first thing to check is that your thermostat is set to ‘cool’ and not ‘fan’ or ‘heat’. The next thing to try would to simply give your AC unit a reboot and see if a hard reset corrects the issue. Sometimes unplugging your AC unit and plugging it back in will re-establish the connection needed from the thermostat to the proper settings.
AC unit is loud and clanky
AC unit’s use a fan to blow the air and coolant throughout the system in your home. Generally, this is quiet and is nothing more audible than a hum when standing near it. However, if your fan is clogged with dirt and debris, it struggles to fully operate and will amplify while under stress. There are also other moving parts that the noise could be attributed to if your fan is not at fault. Dirty belts or bearings can also cause noise within your unit. If this is the case, turn it off and clean these parts to see if it resolves the issue.
High energy costs
According to U.S. Department of Energy, one of the most common reasons of energy loss comes from windows being left open while the air conditioning unit is on. Before blaming the air conditioner for not performing well, make sure that you are optimizing your home to hold in cool air. If you are staying on top of that, then it simply might be time to have your air conditioner replaced or repaired. Like most appliances, air conditioning units age and break down over time.
