At only 19-years-old, and married to 15-year-old Mary Rose Davis, Don Wyckoff Sr. enlists in the Navy to repair war ships during World War II. After three years of service, Don returns home and starts his job at Universal Heating in Des Moines.
Don Wyckoff, Jr., future owner of Wyckoff Heating & Cooling, is born on January 1, 1946. Don Sr. and Mary Rose go on to have six more children – Pam, Ron, Doak, Kyle, Kay, and Tobie.
Don Sr. starts working with his old Navy buddy, Kenny Horn, at Clark-Peterson Company, a large heating and cooling company in Des Moines.
It is May 1950 when Don says to Mary Rose, “I quit my job to start a business”. Don and Kenny Horn formed Wyckoff-Horn Heating and Cooling Company. They worked seven years without taking a day off, their first customer being Bob Stout of Community Builders.
After 10 years in business together, Don and Kenny part ways, and Don decides to move forward with his own business, Don Wyckoff Heating. Don moves his family to the countryside of Carlisle and begins doing business out of his basement, eventually hiring his first employee six months later.
At this point, the business has grown so much that Don Wyckoff Heating moved into the old grocery store on School Street in Carlisle.
Don relocates the business to a vacant two-story building where a swimming pool company used to be.
Don and Mary Rose’s five sons – Don Jr., Ron, Doak, Kyle, and Tobie, take over the family business when Don Sr. retires.
Don Wyckoff Heating purchases the Clark-Peterson Company where Don had worked in the late 1940s. This acquisition doubled the number of employees to 50.
The business moves from Carlisle to larger quarters in Des Moines. As the business expands into new areas, the Wyckoffs start doing business as Wyckoff Industries.
Wyckoff is asked to participate in an American-style housing project in Kofu, Japan, Des Moines’ sister city. This led to several more projects over the years.
Don Jr.’s son, Andy Wyckoff, and Pam’s son, Job Cooper, become third generation owners of Wyckoff Industries, taking their place alongside Don Jr., Ron, Doak, Kyle, and Tobie. Several other Wyckoffs perform other key duties in the family business.
The business moves from Des Moines back to Carlisle (their current location) on Highway 5.
Wyckoff Heating & Cooling continues to serve central Iowa under the leadership of third-generation owners, Andy Wyckoff and Job Cooper. With strong family commitment from the third and fourth generations and employee loyalty, Wyckoff will be a trusted name in the Des Moines area for years to come.
