When It’s Time to Replace Your System
Whether your furnace is reaching the end of its lifespan, or you find it constantly needing repairs, making the investment to replace your heating unit might be the best solution for you and your home. Take time to think about what issues your furnace is having and speak with a Wyckoff technician about what steps to take next.
How Old is Your Furnace?
With a lifespan of 15-20 years, if your furnace is experiencing issues and is over 10 years old, spending the money now to buy a new one could offset the cost of paying for repairs on a dying furnace only to have to buy a new one down the road anyway.
How Often Does Your Furnace Require Repair?
Are you constantly replacing parts or experiencing endless furnace issues? HVAC systems that require frequent repairs or have a major component failure end up costing a lot more in the long run. Similar to your car, there comes a time when an update is cost-effective, convenient, and sensible.
How Efficient is Your Furnace?
In 2006, a new standard was put into effect that required residential systems to have a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of 13 or higher. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the product. As your furnace ages, it becomes increasingly difficult for the system to properly heat your home in a timely and effective fashion, resulting in a lower SEER rating, and an increase in electric bills. If you notice a spike in your payment or are struggling to achieve a comfortable indoor temperature, contact a Wyckoff professional to determine what the next best step will be.
How Do Furnace Repair Costs Compare to a New Unit?
If the repair total is over $800 for a system older than ten years, Wyckoff recommends getting a new furnace. We encourage our customers to follow our rule of 50 — if a repair is 50% or more of what a new system would cost, purchase the new one.
