When It’s Best to Repair Your Air Conditioner

Choosing whether to repair or replace your air conditioner is a tough decision to make, but we try to walk our customers through the different kinds of factors you should take into account to see what is the best fit for your home or business. Some signs that you may need to repair, rather than replace, your air conditioner could be:

Problems Related to a Part & Not Your Whole AC Unit

If your air conditioner is within ten years of age, your unit’s problem could be due to a couple of faulty parts, rather than your unit as a whole. Contact Wyckoff, and we will have a service technician travel to your home to assess your system and see if it can be fixed with a simple part replacement.

Your AC Unit Is Under 10 Years Old

An air conditioner can last anywhere from 15-20 years, so it is important to maximize the life you get out of your unit. If you’re experiencing issues with a new system, a repair may be able to fix the issue, while still allowing you to use your AC for a longer period of time.

Signs You Should Replace Your AC

Your Air Conditioner Uses R-22

As a result of growing environmental concerns, the U.S. Environmental Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22, a type of refrigerant used to charge cooling systems. Production of new units using R-22 ended in 2010, and by 2020, servicing of these systems will rely only on recycled refrigeration, driving up demand and cost. If your AC was manufactured before 2010, it most likely uses R-22 and will need to be replaced to save you money from having to repair a soon-extinct style of air conditioner unit.

Inability to Keep Your Home Cool

As your air conditioner gets older, efficiency declines and it takes longer for your HVAC system to cool your home. Longer air conditioner run times equate to higher electric bills. If you notice your bill is significantly more this month, contact Wyckoff for details on what an AC replacement would entail.
