Are you interested in converting your wood-burning fireplace to a more sustainable option? Wood burning fireplaces are not for everyone – for those with allergies or those who don’t want to mess with the maintenance, there are several modern alternatives for a wood-burning fireplace. At Wyckoff Heating & Cooling we have several options to convert your current fireplace to meet your needs.
When it comes to gas options, there are several. The installation process will vary depending on which type of gas insert you select and where the existing gas lines are in the home.
Gas Log Kit
A gas log kit provides the look of an open fire and does not involve structural changes. When installed, the damper must be locked into a partially open position to ensure proper ventilation. You can avoid heat escaping from your home by also installing tight-fitting glass doors.
Vent-Free Gas Fireplace
Keep all heat in the room and experience the feel of an open fire with a vent-free gas fireplace. Without a vent, this type of fireplace is recommended for three to four hour run times, to keep moisture and exhaust buildup to a minimum.
Gas Fireplace Inserts
Adding an insert provides a clean look without the worry of an open fire. The fireplace front remains closed at all times as the fire chamber is sealed. Direct-vent Gas Inserts allow for all of the combustion air to be provided from the outside and vents fumes outside through the roof of the wall. While producing a real fire, the flame remains behind glass, expelling pollutants through the vent, not into your home. These fireplaces are often more energy-efficient than other options (such as gas logs), and allow for extended hours of operation without moisture and exhaust buildup concerns.
Electric Fireplace Insert
The benefits of an electric fireplace insert are endless. Mobile, ecofriendly and affordable, electric fireplaces do not emit pollutants nor add a safety hazard to your home. Plus, you can turn off your fireplace with the click of a button. Though not an open fire, current electric options feature LED lights to create realistic flames and are an affordable way to upgrade your wood-burning fireplace.
Alcohol Gel Fireplace
An alcohol gel fireplace with faux-log insert is a simple, affordable and realistic way to change your wood-burning fireplace without giving up aesthetics. Place the logs inside your existing hearth. Just one can of alcohol gel can burn for up to three hours and provides an inexpensive transformation with real flames and traditional glow.
